People plan their own safaris for a number of reasons, including cost savings, more control and short trips. If you are only planning on a couple of days at a single lodge in the Ngorongoro Crater, it will be relatively simple to book accommodations and transportation yourself.
Others simply prefer booking trips on their own. They typically enjoy doing the research and crafting a trip that exactly meets their needs. If you have the time and desire, and have experience planning travel in foreign countries, this is certainly doable.
